Stockpile Measurement?

“I’ve been looking at your products and noticed the Contour-Volume-Stakeout app that you have for iOS. I’m wondering if you have something that can use an iPhone or a drone to generate a 3D map for calculating stockpile volumes? I’m looking for something reasonably accurate that is simple to use.”

To generate a 3D map, someone will need to walk on the stockpile with a high-precision GPS receiver to record the XYZ positions. Our iCMTGIS PRO provides the data collection function that you can use in conjunction with the EOS Arrow Gold or an iSXBlue II+ GNSS to record the position values at fixed distance intervals. iCMTGIS PRO comes with the Contour and Volume functionality.


Forester GPS GIS III for iPad released

We are pleased to announce the release of Forester GPS GIS III.

In addition to the functionality of the Forester GPS GIS II app, this app provides the following additional capabilities:

1. Additional data import and export formats

You will also be able to import and export data in Excel and KML formats.
Point Features can be imported and exported via a text file.

2. Contour / Volume

You will be able to create a contour map based on elevation or an attribute.
The contour information will enable you to compute volumes.

3. Load GeoTiff image

You will be able to load a Geotiff image for use as background map.
Such a background map does not require wi-fi connection.
The .tif map image can be used in the Moving Map mode for data collection.

4. Classify

You will be able to classify the Features and place them on sub-layers.

5. Insert or delete nodes

Now you will be able to modify the shape of a Line or Area Feature.
by deleting some nodes or adding some nodes then moving the nodes.

6. Go to and Sort

Jump to a Feature record by specifying the search criterion.
You will also be able to sort the Features based on an Attribute.

7. Report statistics

You will be able to view the statistics for a numeric Attribute of a Feature.

8. Batch delete by text file
You will be able to delete specific Feature records based on a text file.

9. Disconnect Feature

You will be able to easily disconnect Line or Area Feature into Points.
You will be able to disconnect a Line or an Area Feature into Lines.
You will be able to disconnect an Area Feature into two sub-areas.

10. Join Features

You will be able to join Points into a Line or Area Feature.
You will be able join two Lines together to form a new Line.
You will also be able join two Areas together to form a new Area.
(This function replaces the Combine function of Forester GPS GIS II).

A number of customers asked for the ability to generate a contour map from the elevation data in their GPS/GIS mapping job. We are pleased to announce the release of the Contour – Volume – Stakeout app for use on an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

In fact, you can use Contour – Volume – Stakeout to produce a contour map not just for elevations but also for any other numeric variable of interest. If you have a high-accuracy GPS receiver, you could use this app to draw elevation contour lines, make a colored contour region map, and compute earth volumes based on the contours.

If you have sample data collected for a certain variable (such as population or soil pH values) over an area, then you could use this app to produce a contour region map to show the variation of the variable over the area. For example, a contour map of nitrogen content could serve as a guide in fertilizer application.

Contour – Volume – Stakeout provides Point Stakeout and Line Stakeout functions to help you approach a point or move along a line or area boundary.

This app also provides functions for precisely digitizing Points, Lines and Areas over the built-in Map and for viewing their locations, lengths and areas. If your device has GPS capability, you may record the GPS location as a Point, or pick the GPS location as a node for the Line or Area you are creating. Location and elevation accuracies depend on the accuracy of the GPS receiver used.

Please keep in mind that the accuracy in elevation data obtained from a GPS receiver is generally about three times worse than the accuracy for locations on a horizontal plane. Therefore, to contour the elevation data recorded by a GPS receiver, you will want to get the most accurate GPS receiver you can afford to purchase and that is compatible with your iOS device. There are a few brands of external GPS receivers that can work with iPad and iPhones. Garmin Glo, Dual XGPS 150A and the Bad Elf GPS offer about 1 – 3 meters accuracy in the horizontal plane. The iSXBlue II provides sub-meter accuracy (and is much more

The contour map can be printed to PDF. The contour data can be exported in a text file format. The Feature data can be exported in Shapefiles and DXF formats.
